Tag-Scan-Resolve: Autonomous Inventory Reconciliation for Modern DoW Warehousing

Tech Focus Area

Autonomous Logstics

Abstract

The Department of War faces persistent challenges in inventory visibility, asset accountability, and audit compliance, with billions of dollars in assets often untraceable across dispersed, aging warehouse facilities. Manual cycle counting remains labor-intensive, error-prone, and slow, leading to delayed depot repairs, costly write-offs, and readiness gaps for the warfighter. Despite investments in ERP and WMS modernization, real-time, rack-level asset traceability remains elusive.

Automated Cycle Counting (ACC) delivers a transformative, scalable solution by integrating mature RFID, LiDAR, and weight-based sensor technologies into a hardware-agnostic platform that adapts to diverse DoW warehouse environments. ACC tags assets upon receipt, enabling autonomous, passive, or process-integrated scanning without expensive retrofits. AI-driven analytics trace inventory to precise storage locations, validate counts against the system of record, and proactively resolve discrepancies. The result is continuous, audit-ready inventory intelligence accessible from the warehouse floor to senior leadership.

Demonstrations at Corpus Christi and other DoD sites have validated ACC’s ability to tag high-value assets with passive RFID, scan using autonomous carts and forklifts, and rapidly reconcile inventory with minimal infrastructure investment. This approach reduces cycle counting labor by over 50%, accelerates discrepancy resolution, and provides evidence for audit compliance. ACC’s flexible architecture supports integration with existing WMS platforms and scales to tens of billions in inventory across the DoW network.

Designed for cross-service applicability, ACC addresses the unique needs of Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and DLA facilities. Its modular sensor integration enables tailored solutions for rack, bulk, and bin inventory, while leveraging COTS technologies to minimize sustainment costs. Technical maturity is demonstrated through successful pilots, robust security operations, and a deployment roadmap aligned with DoW approval processes.

By automating burdensome cycle counting, ACC empowers the DoW to reduce backlogs, enhance operational transparency, and deliver next-generation inventory intelligence. Ongoing R&D focuses on expanding sensor integration, refining AI-driven discrepancy detection, and supporting policy updates for seamless auditability. ACC stands ready to transition from prototype to operational deployment, transforming maintenance and sustainment across the DoW enterprise.
