Technology Title
Warehouse Utilization Toolkit: Real-Time Warehouse Visibility and Capacity Analytics for the DoW
Tech Focus Area
Autonomous Logistics
Abstract
The Department of War operates thousands of warehouses across diverse missions, yet fragmented storage practices and manual assessments have historically limited network-wide visibility, leading to isolated improvements and missed opportunities for supply chain resilience. The Warehouse Utilization Toolkit (WU Toolkit) addresses this challenge by digitizing warehouse operations, enabling real-time visibility, and optimizing storage capacity across the DoW enterprise.

Leveraging state-of-the-art LiDAR scanning and AI-powered analytics, the WU Toolkit empowers users to create digital surveys of their operations, generate planograms on demand, and produce actionable performance metrics. The platform’s UCAT engine automatically breaks down each storage operation—rack, bin, and bulk—into its component parts, evaluating size, capacity, and utilization square foot by square foot and shelf by shelf. Integrated mission data and qualitative inputs from local stakeholders ensure that storage recommendations are tailored to real-world requirements, including material types, stacking limitations, floor load capacity, and surge support needs.
The methodology combines quantitative metrics (occupancy, density, utilized capacity) with qualitative attributes (mission, material owner, point of consumption), enabling data-driven decisions that maximize warehouse potential while maintaining compliance with safety and operational constraints. The process is fully operationalized: facilities are scanned, 3D models are generated, storage areas are identified and classified, and metrics are validated with local points of contact. Results are uploaded to the ADVANA dashboard, providing authoritative, network-wide insights for strategic and tactical leaders.
Demonstrated across hundreds of DoD warehouses, the WU Toolkit has returned millions in proven value, unlocking organic capacity, reducing manual workload, and enabling cost-effective material support. Its scalable architecture supports rapid digitization, integration with existing supply chain platforms, and continuous improvement as new requirements emerge. By coupling advanced analytics with ground-level engagement, the WU Toolkit transforms warehouse management from isolated assessments to integrated, accessible, and optimized operations across the DoW network.
