CTMA Project #: 140911
Problem: Corrosion control is an important aspect to any piece of equipment where metal touches metal. Corrosion can create weaknesses and cracks that can lead to equipment failure. Because of this critical issue, much research and funding has gone into coatings that retard or eliminate the effects of corrosion.
Benefit: Provides a new means to store and transport goods while maintaining the original appearance of the product. Currently, applique products are used. These are hard to apply, are not suitable for all surfaces, and are a threat to the original product finish. The new temporary coating will allow easy application to larger products made from a larger array of materials. Elongating the integrity of the initial corrosion coating could make legacy equipment more reliable, thereby enhancing its performance.
Solution/Approach: For Phase II, the project team will add to the ongoing work by developing a temporary coating system. For civilian applications, this will be targeted to finished goods that require transportation unprotected from the environment. This includes new cars, industrial equipment, and infrastructure materials. For military applications beyond those that mirror civilian use, the temporary coating will allow ground systems used for readiness training to be coated with the paint color associated with the training objective, which is often different from the actual asset paint color.
