Problem: Maintenance and sustainment organizations in both the commercial industry and DOD struggle with a multitude of disparate systems and applications that are often stove-piped and difficult to manage. Legacy hardware and software systems commonly do not interoperate with each other, let alone with newer, state of the art technologies. As a result, decision makers frequently must rely on incomplete, erroneous and obsolete information to base their maintenance and sustainment decisions on, leading to inaccurate spare parts forecasting, poor inventory management, and long lead repair times for vehicle and equipment fleets.
Benefit: Together with the industry team, the Marine Corps seeks to understand the current state of innovation and demonstrate where technology can be applied at the point of most critical need to assist with immediate and real-time information for the maintenance and sustainment community. Doing so will show other organizations the realm of possibilities and applicability of these new and innovative technologies, and how they can ultimately benefit end users.
Solution/Approach: The overall objective of this initiative is to enhance and expand the access to maintenance and sustainment information through advanced system and data migration technologies and techniques in critical areas. Access to relevant maintenance data and systems beyond the current restrictions of a closed office, and into areas of actual need, such as in maintenance bays, supply depots, on flight lines, and in the field is the desired end state. This initiative will utilize the Marine Corps as a surrogate to examine the specific migration techniques, technologies and processes required to achieve these objectives.
