CTMA Project #: 142195
Problem: Maintaining legacy braking systems requires much more effort as the brake pads wear out much quicker. As the paint or coating chips away, parts are exposed to the elements. As corrosion quickly attacks and rust rapidly forms, total brake pad failure and accelerated wear to the rotors is inevitable.
Benefit: Project deliverables will benefit commercial vehicle owners by demonstrating how older, legacy vehicles can be retrofitted successfully with newer, safer, more advanced components that can reduce accidents, decrease maintenance, and give older vehicles more capabilities.
Solution/Approach: Phase III expands the lessons learned in previous phases and establishes new instructor, operator, and maintainer training plans and packages required to transition the advanced braking and suspension retrofit installation procedures across 10 new active Army and Army National Guard maintenance sites. Introducing modern suspension and braking systems to maintainers of legacy vehicles will expand their skill set and better position them for future maintenance workloads.
