The DOD is partnering with industry and academia on a multi-phase CTMA initiative to enable the transition of AM throughout the DOD and its industrial base, taking a holistic approach regarding the research of feedstock, advanced materials and processes, automation and controls, post-processing, and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) evaluation for the qualification, inspection, and assurance of parts being produced via AM. Key areas to be addressed include:
- Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM)
- Plasma Additive Manufacturing (PAM)
- Friction-Stir Additive Manufacturing (FSAM)
- Plasma Additive Manufacturing (PAM)
- Solid State Additive Manufacturing (SSAM) also known as Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing (CSAM) Advanced AM Materials Technology
Phase II will focus on CSAM, broadly in the areas of material development, process development, and equipment development for additively building new parts as well as performing structural repairs of critical components. New feedstock powders will be developed, tested, and evaluated to improve quality, consistency, and availability as well as reduce cost. Developing, evaluating, and improving the use of automation for CSAM, as well as evaluating its resulting effects on deposit quality, will be conducted as well. New equipment and methods of non-destructive inspection will also be developed to meet application-specific requirements as well as improve the adoption and implementation of cold spray across various use areas within the DOD. This includes expanding the processing capability, and reliability, and reducing the cost of new or existing hardware.
