The DOD is partnering with industry and academia on a multi-phase CTMA initiative to redesign the instrumentation sub-system (ISS) of a legacy weapon system. Obsolescence issues exist in the current electronics section of the Fleet Exercise Section (FES), causing a significant impact in maintenance, supportability, and the time to identify and isolate failures. Complicating this issue is the lack of adequate card-level test set capabilities to assist with fault isolation, troubleshooting, and repair efforts. Finally, a lack of existing requirements and design documentation results in a situation where the program is unable to identify and assess potential program risks associated with the FES.
During Phase I of this effort, accomplishments were made, including a completed evaluation of the current FES electronics with documented system functional requirements and interfaces. The objective of Phase II is to develop a fully designed and tested ISS, taking into consideration the updated set of requirements, including system safety requirements and factory test equipment (FTE) necessary to verify functionality and location of faults. During Phase II, ongoing efforts will be geared to complete the design updates identified in Phase I to the FES squib valve firing circuitry as well as mechanical design updates with accompanying analysis with the goal of completing a Delta CDR (DCDR) prior to execution of Phase III.
