The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to develop tools and guidance that include parameters and key pieces of information needed to make better decisions; future climate challenges and up-and-coming 3D printing capabilities require solidly developed processes prior to entertaining future sustainment.
This initiative will include further development and refinement of an analysis tool called the Vehicle Technology Primer (VTP), which was developed under a previous effort. The VTP is a Technical Readiness Level (TRL) analysis tool for military ground vehicles and equipment with a focus on analysis of technologies with reduced environmental/climate impacts.
The objectives of this project are to:
- Complete development of the VTP to include a user interface that allows for user to search, sort, filter, and compare technologies and output summarized reports.
- Complete evaluation of climate-focused technologies and populate the finalized VTP.
- Develop a process flow for better decision making for additive manufacturing, based on printer properties, material, and desired output performance requirements.
- Develop a design of experiments framework to help identify potential testing and qualification requirements for 3D printing.
- Enhance workforce development, incorporating educational initiatives to further develop the future and continue the advancement of manufacturing concepts.
- Identify future opportunities and enablers to further integrate into the sustainment and maintenance of additive manufacturing.
