The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multi-phase CTMA initiative to advance the state of the art of commercial metal AM technologies, tools, and processes to explore the development of common standards and formats to qualify and certify large metal AM parts for use in equipment and products across commercial and military sectors.
Specific part numbers and materials have been selected from problematic castings that have limited or extinct US sourcing but can be replaced with metal AM alternatives. The initiative will provide a unique, adaptable, and cost-effective approach by using Directed Energy Deposition (DED) commercial best practices and methods. The desired outcome is to determine new qualification and certification processes that consistently ensure large metal AM parts meet necessary safety, reliability, quality, and cost requirements needed maintain and sustain equipment.
Phase II will focus on capturing of in-process information, including tool paths and thermal profiles, to enable the demonstration, testing, and verification of witness coupons and prototype first articles. The result of this work will be a set of bounding requirements, for first article and witness coupon designs for incorporation into the government partner’s documents.
