The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to create a dynamic modular eDrive prototype that can provide power dense vehicle plug-in support. This type of technology is critical to creating resilient electric vehicles.
Presently, the technology gap lies in the assembly and integration of components to form the electric machine, optimizing magnetic material properties, and extracting heat from the modular eDrive to meet manufacturability requirements. The development of the Modular eDrive requires the industry partner to study, design, and prototype the following cutting-edge technology milestones:
- Additive manufacturing (AM) of motor components
- Embedded wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor devices (i.e., additive packaging)
- Innovative cooling system to modular eDrive and electronic modules
