Project Announcement: Comprehensive Digital Engineering Solutions for Legacy Airframes and Subsystems – Phase III

The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to fully integrate a specific aircraft platform into a digital engineering environment. Overall goals include:

  • Develop a comprehensive digital twin including system program office-specified subsystems, and expand the B-1 digital thread
  • Integrate systems into the structural digital twin
  • Merge and create digital threads between various efforts (models, simulations, etc.)
  • Integrate avionics, systems, and weapons into the digital twin
  • Perform feasibility studies on weapons
  • Develop and perform new analyses to assess life and quantify life extension efforts on the airframe
  • Investigate emerging repair technology for applicability to the fleet

Phase III goals include:

  • Complete disassembly, inspection, and scanning of two aircraft assemblies.
  • Model parts to develop a comprehensive digital twin, incorporating structural components, flight systems, avionics, and other aircraft systems.
  • Validate analytical models including loads models, finite element models, mass properties database, and computational fluid dynamic models developed under Phase 1.
  • Proceed with component and architectural modeling of
  • Perform reverse engineering activities on selected components to develop and deliver full technical data
  • Develop computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models and tools to facilitate aircraft stores analysis, integration, and testing.

  • Conduct engineering studies for unsupportable components and/or qualify new sources of repair.
