Project Announcement: Titanium Armor for Lightweight-Weighting Heavy Armored Combat Vehicles

The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to investigate and identify alternative tooling material options utilizing friction stir welding (FSW) to achieve adequate material performance in the joining of titanium parts. This effort will include a determination of the potential for locating a supply source within the US.

Specific goals will include:

  • Determining FSW tool geometries capable of stirring thick titanium material
  • Testing and demonstrating use of various titanium armor-grade materials
  • Developing a design of experiments for FSW process optimization
  • Establishing process techniques relevant to production scale required for manufacturing
