The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to improve repair turnaround time, quality and cost of refurbishment of large marine vessels. Specific objectives include:
- Understand how a specific facility plans and executes repairs of Ship Service Motor Generators (SSMGs)
- Identify capacity constraints and bottlenecks that the selected facility faces, including material, facilities, and labor availability, as well as competition from SSMG work
- Assess potential outsourcing approaches and requirements of SSMG repair and identify methods of incentivizing industry participation
- Provide recommendations for actions by execution, supply and planning activities to improve efficiency and quality of SSMG refurbishment as well as “lessons learned” for future rotable and sustainment initiatives
