The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to demonstrate cost efficient and high-performing maintenance and sustainment plans to enable the operation of current aircraft arresting system (AAS) capabilities and/or ancillary hardware associated with airport operations.
Specific objectives include:
- Incorporate commercial technologies in a prototype system using advanced manufacturing, modeling on digital information (CNC), and demonstrating the use of commercial hardware that can be adapted within the AAS design to fulfill requirements
- Update military sparing lists to reflect the revised Bill of Materials (BOM) needed to sustain the updated AAS configuration
- Update military drawing packages and technical information to reflect the simplified design of a commercial system prototype
- Update existing AAS maintenance plans to reflect the efficiencies gained through the use of a commercial system prototype that offers improved reliability and maintainability. This allows organizations to take advantage of the “multiplier effect” in technology while developing cost-effective and highly agile maintenance and sustainment plans.
In Phase II of this project, efforts will be expanded to assess improvements in the AAS trailer body configuration and technology that were folded in as lessons learned from Phase I. This will include analysis and reporting of updated drawing packages and assessment of mechanical changes to the configuration.
