The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to add functionality to paint films to give properties that are currently only available in traditional spray-applied coatings, as well as design an alternative to spray-applied coatings for spot repair applications.

Specific objectives include:

  • Installation of a lab-scale film extrusion line, including training, setup and calibration to test newly developed multilayer paint film compositions
  • Evaluation of application processes for paint films
  • Development of pressure sensitive adhesive material as part of the film stack
  • Investigation of the corrosion protection of various film technologies
