The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to identify a surface preparation method and develop coatings for composite substates that will improve adhesion, protection, and durability compared to current commercially available options.

Specific goals include:

  • Identify range of composite materials utilized in military and commercial applications
  • Source composite coupons suitable for use in experimental studies
  • Benchmark performance of currently fielded coating systems as applied to composite substrates
  • Develop fundamental understanding of coating system features which affect adhesion and durability
  • Perform research and development to improve coating system performance and ease of use for composite substrate repair
