The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to advance large-scale AM processes to replace or supplement the use of large-scale castings and forgings for high importance, low-volume replacement components for a legacy platform. Specific objectives include:
- Create a data package for main shaft engine seal components (or engine dynamic seal rotor) sufficiently detailed for a low-rate initial production decision for customer acceptance.
- Develop material data package for metal binder jet 17-4 PH stainless steel.
- Quantify the technical and commercial benefits of binder jetting as a low-cost, high-volume option for AM.
