The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multi-phase CTMA initiative to advance the state of the art of commercial metal AM technologies, tools, and processes to develop and establish a rapid AM laboratory for use in qualifying and certifying metal AM to replace hard to source parts across the DOD. Special emphasis will be placed on developing a Smart Manufacturing Strategy and lab usage plan of various stakeholders across academia, industry, small business, national laboratories, and the DOD.

This phase will leverage the successes of earlier phases and will continue to analyze, design, establish and sustain a rapid AM laboratory for use across the DOD.  Key objectives include

  • reviewing and recommending material processing capabilities
  • refining material process flow and facility layout
  • installing and commissioning lab equipment
  • developing an operational and sustainment plan for the lab
