The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to demonstrate viable feedstock for additive manufacturing by taking a holistic approach for the research of feedstock, advanced materials and processes, automation and controls, post-processing, non-destructive testing (NDT) evaluation for the qualification, inspection, and assurance of parts being produced.
The overall objectives include:
- Ensure that material availability for domestic manufacturing can meet the performance and economic targets needed for advanced materials and processes.
- Identify optimal hybrid manufacturing processes to leverage existing infrastructure and advanced manufacturing techniques in a highly synergistic framework.
- Build and test parts, validating that the supply chain can be effectively managed and secured across all elements from materials to manufacturing process.
