The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to implement and demonstrate an enterprise level, multi-source digital tracking tool designed to increase asset visibility, accountability, auditability and mission readiness. This software tool would be required to collect, store, aggregate, and display logistics from Automated Inventory Tracking (AIT), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Next Generation-RFID (AKA mesh), and other sources to track and monitor assets. It would also need to utilize commercial satellite technology to achieve global coverage, and establish a rapidly deployable, self-forming network capable of operating over large geographic areas.

Additional objectives for the tool would include:

  • Providing continuous asset visibility with near real-time accessibility.
  • Delivering a government-owned solution and hosted data center using AWS GovCloud endorsed by the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
  • Sustaining a solution as an authorized and accredited system that operates on secure DOD networks.
  • Aggregating large amounts of data from various data collection technologies.
  • Collecting and combining RFID with barcoding and integrating Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to provide locational and health information of tagged assets.
