The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to develop procedures to refurbish B1 stabilizers to increase existing repair capability until the refurbishment process is developed and validated.
Specific objectives in Phase IV will include:
- Update and deliver digital twin horizontal stabilizer models to reflect the current B model configuration to support this effort, while maintaining all other legacy configurations for potential future use.
- Fabricate, calibrate, and deliver two additional holding fixtures and one additional sling to increase the capacity of the existing repair processes while the refurbishment process is being developed and validated.
- Transport four (4) existing Horizontal Stabilizer Assemblies from a designated United States Air Force (USAF) location to the industry partner’s facility for refurbishment and deliver to a location designated by USAF post-refurbishment. Built crates per spec to support the transportation of these assets.
- Procure parts and refurbish two (2) left hand and (2) right hand horizontal stabilizer assemblies, excluding the L2100233-021/-022 bearing support fittings, which will be reused.
- Any deviations from designed materials, processes, or product definition for part manufacturing will be addressed using existing Technical Coordination Memo (TCM)process, established to support similar issues on backBONE.
- Since the horizontal stabilizer is a Critical Safety Item (CSI), which contains fracture critical parts, specific Quality Assurance (QA) and Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI)requirements may be modified on TCM with B-1 SPO approval.
- Update and deliver any documentation for approved changes to the product configuration including, but not limited to parts lists, drawings, models, and specifications to ensure supportability and airworthiness.
- Deliver all developed technical data, tooling data packages, tooling, and residual parts purchased to support this effort.
