The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to demonstrate viable feedstock candidates for additive manufacturing by taking a holistic approach towards the research of feedstock, advanced materials and processes, automation and controls, post-processing, non-destructive testing (NDT). The goal is to improve the evaluation of qualifications, inspection, and assurance of parts being produced.

The overall objectives include:

• Ensure that material availability for domestic manufacturing can meet the performance and economic targets needed for advanced materials and processes.
• Identify optimal hybrid manufacturing processes to leverage existing infrastructure and advanced manufacturing techniques in a highly synergistic framework.
• Build and test parts, validating that the supply chain can be effectively managed and secured across all elements from materials to manufacturing process.
