The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to study and analyze the best approach to addressing obsolescence and lifecycle sustainment with key Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) components. An Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) studywill consider four key components of the AFCS for replacement:

1. Dual Stabilator Controller
2. Attitude Heading and Reference Unit (AHRU)
3. AHRU Control Panel
4. Flight Control Computer

The industry team will be required to study three different approaches for replacement, considering the factors of technical risk, schedule, cost, and availability. The approaches include:

1. Whole system redesign using modified commercial off-the-shelf elements to align with larger commercial solution bases
2. Serial redesign of form, fit, function replacements for each obsolete component
3. Optimized hybrid approach of custom redesign blended with COTS components
