NCMS Project #: 143053
Problem: Aircraft maintenance and sustainment planning is a critical aspect ensuring continuity of air travel. Maintenance and sustainment activities must meet tight deadlines while adhering to stringent quality standards. In recent years, there has been an increase in safety and maintenance issues for commercial airlines demonstrating the need for better aircraft maintenance and sustainment planning.
Benefit: The results of this effort can translate to the commercial aircraft industry to improve efficiencies and ensure demand for operational aircraft fleets is met.
Solution/Approach: This effort will seek to improve the planning of aircraft maintenance and sustainment availabilities by using the U.S. Navy as a surrogate. As a new aircraft capability is introduced into the fleet, each decision across maintenance and sustainment planning has significant cost and availability impacts. To support this effort, modeling potential outcomes and evaluating costing options will allow the Navy to make the most efficient and effective decisions to achieve the required availability while managing program costs.
