The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMA initiative to build out the digital twin methodology for moving a legacy system and its components into the digital world. This methodology will be applicable across the entire aviation industry and other commercial sectors that have a need to move into a digital environment to reduce maintenance costs and streamline operations.

Additionally, this effort will develop and demonstrate tools and techniques to leverage the digital twins for improvements to advanced manufacturing techniques and processes that will ultimately enable better management of diminishing manufacturing sources.

Specific goals will include:

  • Develop and demonstrate digital models and data for selected aircraft systems and components.
  • Prove the ability to integrate digital data across multiple commercial platforms and not be limited to a single solution.
  • Support Condition-Based Maintenance Plus (CBM+) by providing weapon system digital twins to support Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System (JCIDS) processes.
  • Prototype capabilities for match drilling, robotics, and automation.
  • Develop, evaluate, and demonstrate advanced manufacturing and additive manufacturing capabilities.
  • Demonstrate modeling and simulation tools related to a wide range of sustainment and maintenance challenges.
  • Demonstrate how the commercial market, working with the government, can bring new concepts and capabilities to organizations that create value, lower costs, and increase mission success.
  • Develop and demonstrate digital models crucial to an AI environment for virtual simulations of weapon systems.

Phase II will build upon and advance the technologies and tools demonstrated during Phase I and will also explore how digital twins are critical to the application of Condition-Based Maintenance Plus (CBM+) and advanced AI applications.
