With maintenance and sustainment that must be performed worldwide, replacement part lead times can cause an issue to in keeping US forces up and running. A CTMA initiative created a prototype portable manufacturing system to help mitigate the problem. The system will serve as a sort of triage, providing much needed temporary parts that will keep assets usable while waiting for the more traditionally created parts to arrive.
- The portable manufacturing system will be a containerized version of a fabrication lab.
- The project focuses on enabling rapid implementation of parts through secure access to engineering data stored in a government digital repository, which will also enable the production of parts for legacy machines.
- Capabilities also include real-time evaluation for design improvements of faulty parts and other future improvements.
