The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to develop and validate a standardized, performance-based qualification framework for AM structural and critical components for aviation parts.

Specific objectives include:

  • Develop a Unified Process: Consolidate existing DoW and public standards into a cohesive qualification process that meets rigorous airworthiness requirements.
  • Align Design and Manufacturing: Establish AM frameworks that synchronize with strategic initiatives like the performance-based additive qualification consolidated strategy (PAQCS) and the Joint Additive Qualification for Sustainment (JAQS) program.
  • Validate via Case Study: Reverse-engineer, prototype, and test a legacy aircraft component to create a certified AM equivalent with a complete technical data package (TDP).
  • Deliver Replicable Documentation: Generate comprehensive Process Control Documentation (PCD) and technical reports to serve as a template for future public and private sector qualification efforts.
