The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to establish new methods for identifying the survivability of electronics systems in various Earth orbits, which expose these components to space energetic particle radiation. The overall goal is to demonstrate the delivery of high energy heavy ion beams with a dedicated beamline and user test station that is packaged appropriately for single event effect (SEE) testing and dosimetry reporting.

Specific objectives include:

  • Design, fabrication, procurement, installation, and commissioning of a dedicated beamline on a linac segment 3 of a specific Facility for Rare Isotope Beams linear accelerator
  • Installation of user test infrastructure including test stand, controls, and signal acquisition support
  • Installation of user access and radiation protection systems including passive shielding and active detection and mitigation
  • Demonstration of key performance parameters for the ion beams including ion species, ion energy, transverse profile and temporal structure
