bz® Cleaning Cloths: Modernizing DoD Sustainment Through SAE AMS3819 Qualified Cleaning Materials

Tech Focus Area

Coatings and Corrosion Prevention

Abstract

bz® Aerospace Cleaning Cloths provide the Department of Defense (DoD) with the first standardized SAE AMS3819Equalified cleaning material. This creates a repeatable, contaminationfree baseline that strengthens sustainment across aviation, weapons, ground vehicles, and ships in both expeditionary and depot operations. Replacing unregulated COTS rags, cheesecloth, and generic wipes improves maintenance efficiency and reduces process variability across the DoD enterprise. Surface preparation is the foundation of all advanced sustainment technologies; AMS3819Equalified wipes provide the engineered, residuefree, corrosionpositive baseline required for stateoftheart tools to perform as intended.

The lowlint, nonabrasive structure produces clean, residuefree surfaces for coatings, adhesives, and sealants. Controlled solvent release ensures uniform wetting and eliminates fiber contamination that causes FOD and undermines corrosion control. NAVAIR testing confirmed bz® does not scratch or haze acrylic or polycarbonate transparencies, addressing a longstanding readiness and cost driver. bz® is listed on the SAE AMS3819E QPL and is the only QPLauthorized option with active NSNs.

bz® absorbs hydraulic fluid, oils, fuels, grease, and cakedon contamination while maintaining wet structural stability for precision and heavyduty tasks. Field use at Tinker ALC and FRCSW has demonstrated reduced solvent consumption, lower VOC exposure, improved OSHA compliance, and avoidance of localized VOC permits. Standardized, QPLqualified materials reduce rework, accelerate cycle time, lower manpower burden, and improve firsttime quality. No infrastructure changes, new equipment, or technical data revisions are required, enabling immediate enterprisewide adoption.

The system supports diverse mission profiles through three interchangeable formats: dry technical wipes for precision tasks or pairing with bulk chemicals; onsite presaturation using a closedloop bucket system that minimizes hazardous waste; and presaturated sachets produced in a domestic EPA/FDAregistered facility with zeroheadspace laminate that eliminates opencontainer hazards and provides indefinite shelf life. All formats align with existing DoD and DLA distribution pathways through active NSNs.

bz® extends across aerospace, tactical ground vehicles, shipboard systems, and weapons repair without altering facility infrastructure. Adopting bz® as a DoDwide standard reduces process variability, strengthens corrosion control, improves readiness, and delivers measurable gains in safety, environmental compliance, and sustainment cost with minimal transition burden.
