The Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME) at The Ohio State University is a nationally recognized advanced manufacturing research center that combines innovative technology development with a uniquely impactful approach to workforce preparation. CDME’s mission is to advance the United States’ manufacturing competitiveness and strengthen national security by developing both emerging technologies and the skilled workforce needed to deploy them.

CDME has partnered with over 150 companies, completed 1000+ applied projects, and accelerated technology adoption in sectors vital to U.S. competitiveness.

CDME leverages expertise in additive manufacturing, AI and automation, biomedical and medical device prototyping, materials and welding, precision machining, molding and forming, prototyping, and manufacturing cybersecurity. This approach allows CDME to transform emerging technologies into market ready solutions for industry and government partners.

What sets CDME apart is its commitment to experiential learning. Undergraduate students employed at CDME gain transformative, hands-on experience working on real-world industry projects through the center’s experiential learning model, which prepares them to contribute from day one in the workforce. More than 430 students from over 40 majors have participated in this mentor-based program, developing practical skills across various disciplines. Students at CDME are programming robotic systems, developing medical devices, and leveraging advanced 3D printing techniques.
