Problem: Traditional research and development of adhesive formulations requires long lead times due to benchtop formulation and hands on testing review processes. This type of research and development is limited by human inputs, time constraints, formulation understanding, testing availability, and project resources. These limiting factors slow innovation to market time and can stagnate the ability to bring next generation adhesives to fruition.
Benefit: This innovation would benefit many commercial business sectors as adhesive products are used virtually everywhere including automotive, marine uses, home products, and beyond. Innovations of these materials will benefit the American public by moving the needle forward so next generation adhesive properties can be imagined, tested, and brought to market without the constraints of traditional research.
Solution/Approach: The overall objective of this effort is to use artificial intelligence (AI) to create innovative epoxy adhesive formulations. This will be done by starting with a base formulation of conventional bisphenol A-based epoxy resin and an amine-terminated curing agent and evaluating different combinations of molecular weights for the resins and curing ratios, including the curing agent, curing agent-to-resin mixed ratios, and different curing temperatures.
