The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to develop, evaluate, and demonstrate an improved production process for critical safety webbings by enhancing current shuttle loom manufacturing processes. The overall goal is to demonstrate a modernized production process that results in at least a 50% reduction of production lead times and to establish a flexible manufacturing environment capable of rapidly scheduling short-run production cycles without extensive downtime.

Key objectives include:

  • Identifying shuttle looms capable of producing safety webbings that meet military and industry specifications for tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and other critical safety requirements
  • Developing and demonstrating an improved, high-velocity production process for critical safety webbing by modernizing current shuttle loom manufacturing capabilities (i.e., integrated rotary dobbies and larger materials beams)
