The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on a multiphase CTMAinitiative to demonstrate a Foreign Object Debris (FOD) detection and collection system in a production environment. The solution deployed will include multiple technical advancements; to include autonomous electric vehicles, novel command and control, new collection payload and detection radar integrated with command and control. The overall goal is a demonstration of a system that increases flight safety, decreases maintenance and sustainment activities and costs, and mitigates other constraints caused by runway debris. An additional goal is to show how these technologies could be expanded to address tasks beyond FOD collection, such as mowing, towing, perimeter security, delivery, personnel movement, and many more operations unique to smart airfield environments.

Phase III will expand upon learnings from previous phases by expanding autonomous airfield FOD demonstrations and adding turf management processes.
