The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance the state-of-the-art in maturing thermoplastic propellant manufacturing approaches for base-bleed/base-burner grains using processing methods analogous to commercial polymer manufacturing.

The team selected for this effort must have the knowledge and experience to refine the thermoplastic propellant formulation, establish live-material mixing, shredding, extrusion, pelletizing, and compression-molding processes, develop molding tooling and a compatible inhibitor, and conduct material, mechanical, ballistic, and manufacturing characterization. The overall goal is to reduce tooling quantities and maintenance, enable reuse of excess or discrepant material, reduce manual energetic-material handling, support automation, and establish repeatable manufacturing parameters and technical data needed to maintain and sustain a future production capability
