NSN Gap Detection Powered by AI

Abstract

Mission Impaired Capability Awaiting Parts (MICAP) events continue to degrade aircraft readiness and operational availability, with a disproportionate share of impacts driven by a relatively small number of high-impact National Stock Numbers (NSNs) that remain outside established tracking and corrective-action processes. These emerging readiness drivers often go unmanaged until they become chronic shortages, resulting in extended maintenance delays, increased aircraft downtime, and reduced mission capability. Current sustainment efforts are primarily focused on known problem items, creating a gap in visibility, accountability, and proactive intervention for newly emerging risks.

This proposal introduces an AI-enabled Readiness Surveillance and Intervention Framework designed to continuously identify, prioritize, and manage NSNs based on their readiness impact, MICAP contribution, and supply chain performance. By integrating maintenance, logistics, reliability, and readiness data, the framework provides early detection of emerging shortages and readiness threats before they significantly affect fleet operations. The approach incorporates structured governance, stakeholder ownership, and Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) processes to drive resolution and measure effectiveness through readiness outcomes.

By transforming previously untracked NSNs into actively managed readiness priorities, the framework complements existing sustainment initiatives while expanding enterprise visibility into hidden readiness drivers. The anticipated benefits include reduced MICAP duration, improved aircraft availability, enhanced supply chain resilience, better allocation of sustainment resources, and stronger accountability across the readiness enterprise. Ultimately, this capability enables proactive decision-making and measurable improvements in operational readiness by preventing supply chain issues from becoming mission-impacting events.
