Advanced Manufacturing Workshop
July 16-18
EVENT DETAILS

You are cordially invited to join government, industry, and academia/nonprofit leaders to participate in the upcoming Department of Defense (DOD) 2024 Additive Manufacturing (AM) Workshop, July 16-18, 2024, to be held at the Lockheed Martin Center for Leadership Excellence in Bethesda, MD. The theme of this workshop will be “Operationalizing AM from Factory to the Front Line,” and the objectives are to identify gaps and opportunities in advanced manufacturing implementation and propose next steps.

We are seeking interested parties from military, government, industry, and academia/nonprofits to actively participate in the workshop. This event presents a unique opportunity for participants to collaborate with DOD functional stakeholders on key issues that pertain to leveraging advanced manufacturing capabilities to support an ongoing crisis.  All registrants will participate in the scenario as a member of one of four breakout groups: Data Management, Business Models and Contracting, Standards & Guidance, or Sustainment.

This workshop is being conducted by the DOD Manufacturing Technology Program, under the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Science & Technology (DASD-ST) and by the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Materiel Readiness (DASD-MR), with support from DOD’s Joint Additive Manufacturing Working Group, America Makes, and the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences.

  • Data Management: Additive manufacturing relies on the digital thread. This group will explore bringing AM data to the entire enterprise from the CONUS-based industrial base, to the OIB, to in-theater fabrication cells, to allies and their industrial base. Subtopics: Command and control of advanced manufacturing through a Common Operating Picture, data repositories/exchanges, workflows, PM/cognizant engineering approvals, cybersecurity, the role of AI/ML, intellectual property, and training on use of enterprise systems.
  • Business Models and Contracting. Operationalizing advanced manufacturing technology requires a look at how DoD does business. The AM Workshop has recognized this fact from the beginning. This group will look at agile contracting, flexible business models, growing the supply chain, intellectual property rights, specially negotiated license rights, engineering change processes, life cycle sustainment plans, coalition agreements, international partners, sustaining AM systems (materials, technical support, and training).
  • Standardization & Guidance: AM standardization is needed across the defense industrial base and with operational forces. Subtopics: qualification, certification, inspection, materials, AM Guidebook, education, training, decision logics and tools, standardized BDAR part categorization.
  • Sustainment: Subtopics:
    • Joint Logistics Enterprise and DLA implementation, LCSP, ECPs, IP, materials, qual/cert, feedstock material (store/handling/transport) standards.
    • Proliferation of AM systems – AM production capacity/availability visibility, enterprise feedstock materials, connection to data (CJCOP-O)
    • Adaptive Deployment Packages/Exercises: Pre-positioning equipment/materials/data and trained personnel. In-theater considerations
