Securing critical mineral supplies, such as the copper used in printed circuit boards, is a top priority for the US government and the private sector. A recent CTMA project is attempting to accelerate the domestic production of copper foil through expanding the manufacturing of electrodeposited copper foil. The process optimization aims for improved efficiency, reduced costs, and scaled performance.
- To achieve optimization gains, the team modernized a plant’s industrial control systems alongside targeted capital investments in core plant infrastructure and processing equipment.
- Another major focus was workforce development and training.
- “The pace we achieved comes down to two things: a cleaner process and a very capable team, which let us start shipping copper foil to customers much sooner than a typical ramp,” said Judodine Nichols, Chief Technology Officer of Principal Mineral.
