Since 2022, the Federal Aviation Administration has been participating in a partnership known as the Airfield Autonomy Initiative (AAI). The initiative focuses on advancing the autonomous capabilities on airfields. The goal is to automate routine tasks to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and increase safety. In spring 2025, the new phase of AAI, named AAI Next, successfully demonstrated systems for three routine tasks: perimeter patrol, foreign object debris sweeping, and grass cutting.
- AAI Next conducted 1,793 autonomous missions over eight weeks with zero safety issues and a 99.55 success rate.
- The AAI Next initiative was launched when NCMS issued a request for proposals that solicitated autonomous capabilities needed at airfields for the three tasks.
- A cloud-based platform oversees vehicle scheduling, routing, and coordination.
