Autonomous vehicles depend on accurate and effective electronic sensors to navigate. If a sensor is blocked due to mud, dust, smoke, or other blockages, it can’t function properly. The Functional Coatings for Vehicle Autonomy project seeks to develop sensors and optics that are durable and easier to clean using specialized coatings.
- Beyond maintaining sensor vision, functional surface coatings can also enhance sensor vision by painting other vehicle components or infrastructure with sensor-friendly coatings that either enhance the signal response or provide a unique response to help the autonomous system software differentiate between features.
- Phases 1-3 of the project focused on easy-to-clean coatings, the interactions of coating systems with sensors, and delivering demonstration plans for the best-performing coatings.
- Phase 4 has combined all the previous phases’ findings to conduct in-field demonstrations. The team conducted tests in a range of harsh environments with great success.
