First flown in the 1970s, the B-1 fleet has had a long career. But despite its redesign in the 1980s, the aging fleet is now facing challenges relating to its sustainment, leading to lower-than-desired readiness levels. To combat these challenges, the maintenance and modernization of the fleet is infusing modern technology to the technical baseline. Using digital tools, such as digital twins and product lifestyle management, the B-1 fleets sustainment is being streamlined, its longevity is being extended, and new capabilities are being built.
- Digital twins of B-1 aircraft are created to test and analyze the current fleet.
- The digital twins have also been used to prototype the replacement of a 33-foot section of the upper fuselage, which serves to expand longevity opportunities.
- After demonstrating the accuracy and trustworthiness of an engineering analysis, Air Force Seek Eagle Office was able to outsource the development of some new capabilities for the B-1 fleet to the digital twin team.
