A CTMA project has been deploying new corrosion-mitigation processes and technologies aboard an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. Such work includes the deck edge being cleaned, primed, coated, and paint protection film installed and the freeboard cleaned, primed, and coated. The process and technologies allowed the work to be done at the pier where the ship was still in semi-operation status.

  • The corrosion remediation process used, called Induction Coating Removal and Laser Ablation (ICRALA), utilizes two technologies, induction heating and lasers, which cuts waste production and saves paint.
  • The painting process happens next, finishing with a paint protection film to help mitigate corrosion. Part of this work includes placing polymer additively manufactured scuppers to combat rust running down the freeboard.
  • Last remediation addressed in this project is applying the Fluidized Bead coating system to the watertight fixtures on the ship, which involves removal, remanufacture, coating, and installation over seven days.
