NCMS Project #: 142343

Problem: Incursion of moisture and resulting corrosion into structures and electronics are major maintenance and sustainment issues for vehicles and other transportation platforms. There are time-proven methods to prevent and control moisture and corrosion that can reduce or eliminate its impact on maintenance failures and the potential benefits to public safety, the economy, and the environment. However, investment in new technologies such as custom fitted transportation platform covers using advanced materials that are biodegradable and last longer are still needed.

Benefit: A properly designed, tested, and manufactured vehicle cover can help prevent maintenance failures due to extreme weather and environmental conditions during storage, decreasing repair and maintenance costs for commercial products and making them more reliable, available, and safer to operate.

Solution/Approach: The intent of this initiative is to advance the state of new vehicle cover designs, materials, and manufacturing processes that can better protect vehicles and other equipment, including on-board electronics and critical components, from environmental and weather conditions in a manner that is cost effective, safe, extends equipment useful life, and is easy to maintain. Using the U.S. Army’s Infantry Squad Vehicle, this initiative seeks to pilot new vehicle cover design, testing, and manufacturing approaches to prove out new materials and processes so they can be documented to reduce maintenance failures.
