Problem: The lack of durability of non-skid coatings on aircraft carrier decks is one of the major problem areas within NAVSEA.  Flight deck non-skid coatings on CVN and LHA/LHD platforms must withstand extreme service conditions, including impact, abrasion, exposure to organic fuels and lubricants, as well as, frequent cleaning.

Solution/Approach: A polymeric non-skid coating will be developed.  Leverage the advanced polymer chemistry used in roadway overlays and utilize ultra-tough, state-of-the art abrasives used in long-life steel cutting and grinding tools to support vehicular traffic within 4 hours of application at 50ºF.  A conventional rolled-on formulation and a semi-automated spray-applied formulation will be developed.

Impact on Warfighter:

  • Improved safety – aircraft do not slide
  • Carriers deployed longer if necessary, and at-sea repairs will be eliminated.
