CTMA Project #: 140918
Problem: Vulnerabilities can exist in all systems, networks, and applications (hardware, software, and infrastructure) and threats can be intentionally implanted (e.g., malicious code insertion) or via unintentional vulnerabilities maliciously exploited (e.g., poor quality or fragile software). Consequences can be loss of critical data and technology, software vulnerabilities that are targeted or surface in sustainment, and exploitation of development and manufacturing supply chain. This can result in damage to national security or critical warfighting capability or a degradation of weapon systems and readiness.
Benefit: Results derived from this initiative will allow any organization, public or private, to investigate new and emerging technologies without the risk of being subjected to countless domestic and international cyber threats. Implementing the protective measures demonstrated by this project will help provide industry with options for additional layers of security. As cyber-attacks become more prevalent (even among the civilized nations) it is more crucial now than ever for the DoD to take any and all steps necessary to protect national security assets and the critical infrastructure associated with those assets.
Solution/Approach: Phase II seeks to address the cloud computing platform itself in order to provide industry with the blueprint to facilitate compliant development, testing, product lifecycle support, and IT portfolio modernization and in concert with the movement to more virtualization.
Impact on Warfighter:
- Expedited migration of secure cloud computing capability
- Rapid capability development and integration
- Attaining SwA requirements and integrating them into engineering processes at all stages of the SDLC
- Reduce risk and vulnerabilities
- Increase cyber defense posture
- Underwrites security requirements across aging IT Portfolios in need of modernization strategy
- Leverages industry at all levels of SwA to take advantage of their R&D investment which enhances mission area capability for government and DoD operations
- Minimizes burden on acquisition programs
