CTMA Project #: 140854
Problem: Modern enterprise logistics support is an essential and complex operation. It encompasses engineering, manufacturing, contracting, maintenance, inventory management, obsolescence, transportation tracking, and lifecycle management. Each of these is supported by individual information technology (IT) systems consisting of a growing number of increasingly complicated stand-alone systems. Unfortunately, expensive Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) tools have demonstrated limited success in integrating these data sources across domains.
Benefit: This activity should lead to reduction of overall costs to provide services in an international arena by affording more opportunities for competition. DoD will gain some efficiency savings due to automating some of the processes that are currently being done manually. By developing data exchange flows and integrating back-end systems, through use of a single commercial and NATO set of standards, the DoD can begin to leverage the inherent benefits of mutual sustainment activities while achieving and maintaining cost reduction across the Joint Force.
Solution/Approach: JMDEI III will consist of a narrowly-focused effort building on the progress established in the previous two project phases to lay the groundwork for meaningful logistics innovation. Prior phases revealed the value of ISO 10303 based PLCS, as well as the necessity for additional data ontology study. Phase III will include data mapping, data pull, data replication, data migration, and data synchronization. Accomplishments will be proven in a series of demonstration vignettes. It will support development of plans, strategy, and technology assessments to define Joint Enterprise Data Interoperability (JEDI) approached to data management challenges at Fleet Readiness Center East in North Carolina.
