Problem: Nickel electroplating is a labor-intensive process, involving multiple masking steps and extensive machining after the coating is deposited. Scrap rates are high, and turnaround times are long.
Benefit: Incorporation of special tooling, using an approach proven for chromium plating processes, will increase throughput and quality, and may make it possible to return parts to service that are now being scrapped.
Solution/Approach: Tooling will be installed on sulfamate nickel lines at Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD) and Fleet Readiness Center (FRC) Southwest for selected high volume parts. The throughput and quality of the parts coated with the tooling will be compared with the standard method.
Impact on Warfighter:
- Equipment will be returned to service more quickly
- Maintenance facilities will spend less time and fewer resources on the plating operation, freeing up capacity for other tasks
