CTMA Project #: 142050
Problem: The maritime maintenance industry requires IT systems that are able to accurately and efficiently perform maintenance planning for fleets of highly complex ships, often maintaining, managing, scheduling, and executing millions of component level requirements to ensure their ships are able to complete their required functions and deliver the worlds goods and services. Custom coded software solutions have been used in the past to meet these requirements. However, custom coded applications tend to remain static and unchanged without gaining any enhancements (including cybersecurity enhancement) without considerable investment by the company.
Benefit: COTS software solutions transition with technology gains in the industry without end user investment, remain cyber secure as known vulnerabilities are constantly evaluated and corrected and released to the end user via patches, and overall can result in a net savings to the end user when compared to maintaining and enhancing a custom coded application.
Solution/Approach: The overall objective of this initiative is to demonstrate that a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) PLM solution can accurately and efficiently perform maritime industry maintenance business functions at acceptable performance levels, while maintaining a cyber secure IT solution. The solution will be represented by configuration changes made to the Navy COTS PLM software to meet performance requirements, and changes to the core COTS PLM software incorporating lessons learned from this evaluation and demonstration to leverage within the maritime maintenance industry.
