CTMA Project #: 140902

Problem: The problem is the maintenance and sustainment industry is just beginning to understand how big data analytics can provide benefit and is developing a myriad of tools that turn data into actionable intelligence. After considerable research and interaction with industry, the Navy has decided to pilot GE’s SmartSignal technology, which has been used for over 15 years to monitor a wide variety of equipment for asset-intensive industries such as oil and gas production, power generation, civil aviation, mining, and others.

Benefit: Objectives achieved through this project will allow GE to show how predictive analytic technologies can be used in conjunction with existing sensors and instrumentation to provide advanced warning of major failures.

Solution/Approach: The outcome of Phase I showed significant cost avoidance savings for the vessels and assets selected. Phase II will improve data quality and fidelity for improved prognostics and CBM capability. Phase II will focus on deployed vessels to increase data input and prognostic model fidelity and recommendations.
