The US Department of War is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to advance the state of the art in a modular, sustainment-driven upgrade and integration framework that enables the rapid insertion, replacement, and upgrade of advanced vehicle technologies without disrupting operations, maintenance or lifecycle support. The overall goal is to establish standardized retrofit and upgrade tools and processes aligned with Army technical and maintenance standards, allowing new capabilities to be integrated into legacy vehicles as interchangeable modules rather than bespoke retrofits.
Specific objectives include:
- establish standardized, modular interfaces that allow new technologies to be installed quickly with minimal integration effort
- verify new installations using built-in diagnostics and automated test procedures to confirm fit, performance, and compatibility before the vehicle is returned to service
- document modification kits applied to the vehicles in the Master Modification Information System
