The US Department of Defense is partnering with industry and academia on an initiative to investigate and review the capability of AM manufacturing to produce identified critical parts with their respective raw materials while ensuring that the original part functionality is maintained or improved through identified part testing.
The objectives for this initiative are to determine part and material selections and substitution options, and then to determine appropriate batch testing and inspection parameters for component validation. This data driven process map will enable a framework for the application of AM of critical gasket, seals, and O-rings, which will ensure availability of operationally critical components in a timely manner. These components will provide expanded maintenance and repair capabilities without adding additional parts to the supply chain. Industry participants will identify manufacturing solutions utilizing AM technology/materials that can deliver multiple parts as well as testing for said parts in accordance with the government provided test plan.
